08.15.09 - one month old!!
In honor of Miss Lila being one month old (!!!) I thought I’d make a list of the things I’m getting really good at doing one-handed.
- Typing
- Eating
- Cooking (seriously – last night I made rigatoni bolognese! Okay, so the sauce was pre-made and frozen, but still… it was a hot stove, one pot and one pan meal. That involved boiling water.)
- Reading (as it happens, turning pages isn’t all that easy with one hand)
- Doing my makeup (and it wasn’t half bad)
- Laundry
- Washing dishes (actually washing them, not just loading them in the dishwasher)
I have yet to attempt going to the bathroom with the kid in tow, but I hear it’s only a matter of time.
We’ve had a fairly busy week – a 2-year-olds birthday party, a going away party for some dear friends before they move to Boston (boo!), another Mommy & Me class, a jaunt to U Village to meet up with some friends who hadn’t met the wee one yet…. And a few times, Grandma has come over to babysit while I’ve gone into the bar to help the husband get ready to open (which should be this weekend). The place has come a LONG way, but there’s still quite a bit to do.
In other news, Lila has burst onto the double digit scene. At our appointment on Monday she weighed in at 10 lbs, 2 oz! I’ve said it before… the kid can eat. And fortunately, she’s doing much better in the car. I’ve stuck with the disposable diaper idea and it does seem to be working. Pretty soon, though, she’ll be in her fancy-schmancy Bum Genius diapers full-time and it seems they do a much, MUCH better job than her current diapers of wicking away the moisture. So, though she may actually be sitting in a puddle of her own piss, she won’t feel like she is.
While we’re progressing in a few areas, we seem to have taken a few steps back from being close to locking in some semblance of a schedule or routine. Two nights ago I decided to start a bedtime routine, but after a rough day yesterday I couldn’t be bothered. Pretty much all day she would only eat for about a minute at a time, so it took forever to actually get her fed. And, of course, by the time she was “finished” we’d just have to start all over because it had been 3 hours. Ugh. Hopefully today is better.

I see you’re making good use of her extensive wardrobe! I’m actually quite impressed with your one-handed skills. I was the last person in our house to learn. I think I got it down at 5 months.
As for going to the bathroom, I just lay her down on a towel on the bathroom floor. This works great for showers too, but sometimes the toilet or shower would startle her, so I would say “Whoosh!” before the loud noise (not me btw), so she was prepared. Dang method actually worked…I surprised myself.
It was awesome meeting you and your little squishy at dinner too!
